A. Saw a movie
B. Went out to eat
C. Watched the Olympics
D. Rescue someone off the side of Mt. Timpanogos
This weekend I went up Mt. Timpanogos as part of the Timpanogos Emergency Response Team. We got up there late late Friday night. Saturday we hiked up a little further to what we call Hospital Rock that over looks a partly melted glacier that some people slide down from the Summit to save some time. Around 1030am we got a call from the Sheriff's office about a 25 year old male sliding down the glacier who now had a broken tib/fib. We used the binoculars to look up the glacier and sure enough we could see him with his group of friends. We called life flight and they were coming from Ogden because the other 2 local air ambulances were already called out to accidents somewhere else.

Since I was the volunteer EMT I headed up mountain with one of the radio guys to go help. We made it up in about 40 min (not bad considering the snow, big rock, and steepness). As we were getting there the Helicopter circled around to scope out the area and decide there was no way for them to land on site so they landed down by hospital rock and waited for me to get there and do an initial assessment of the patient. When I got there the guy was conscious and breathing and in extreme pain. He was cold but not in shock, his friends were holding him on the mountain because its about a 45 degree slope and covered in snow and ice. I cut his pant leg to see what the problem was and it was obviously broken. The bone had broken, come out of the skin and left about a 4 in cut about mid shin before it went back in to his leg. I took his shoe off and cut his sock off and tried to find a pulse in the foot. There was none, so I had to set his leg, which consequentially caused him a lot of pain but I found a pulse. I had one of his friends hold pressure on the bleeding. Once all that was done we communicated with life flight and they came up and hovered above us and dropped a Medic out of the sky.

The medic was super cool and gave me supplies to do everything. I splinted the leg and put a cervical collar on the patient. The medic got out his hoist net and then he called the helicopter back up. The chopper hovered above us and picked the medic up and they were gone.
They landed back down by hospital rock and finished patient care (IVs and immobilization) before the took him to the hospital in the Helicopter.

Hands down one of the coolest things that I've ever done! One of the other guys that has been doing this for 12 years said It was the coolest rescue he had seen because the actually used a hoist. Needless to say it made me want to be a Life Flight Medic and jump out of helicopters and save people.

amazing!!!really cool-although I did gag at your discription
So was it a rescue mission that kept you from coming to Katie, Jack and Julia's baptism last week? No just kidding. Actually I saw Dan and Angela there as well as some McQueen cousins and thought, "what are they doing here?" I had not thought to invite anyone besides who was already coming into town for the occassion. I'm so forgetful like that. Sorry we so rudely didn't invite you to ANOTHER family activity. I'm still getting used to having so much family around.
That sounds like a cool experience. Calvin would have loved for you to help him with his fractured skull. Maybe next time, Just kidding there better not be a next time for Calvin! Brad you have my vote I think that would be so cool to jump out of helicopters! Love ya
Well, it is obvious that you have followed your heart and found part of your mission for this life. How great to be able to use your talents for the benefit of others. You know I love clinical stuff, so you can always share your stories with me!
