Evan Bennett Elmer

For those waiting for details (for those not... ignore all the writing!):

Labor Day: We got to the hospital at 5:30 am and about an hour later the nurse started the Pitocin and my Doctor broke my water. We were all smiles and excited until the contractions started really kicking in. The nurse came back in at about 10 and said she could tell i was ready for my epidural because i was not smiling anymore (and believe me... i WAS ready for that epidural too) ... BUT my anesthesiologist was not. He had to do an emergency C-section and was not able to come yet. So I decided to hang in there since I really didn't want to take pain meds...

Well, about 11:00 am my Dr came in to check me and said i was still ONLY a 2.5 (i was sure i was at least a 6 cuz i was in so much pain). And i was dying from the contractions and STILL waiting for my epidural. Well, after hearing it still could be another hour for my epidural since there were others in line, i asked/begged for the pain meds to hold me over till i was able to get the coveted epidural. And boy, the pain meds were wonderful! I immediately felt drugged and couldn't keep my eyes open, and was in and out until about 1:00 when I was dilated to a 5 (thank heavens), and i was able to get the epidural.

Ladies, how do you do it without an epidural?!?! It was wonderful! After that, I just took naps until our little angel was ready to come. At about 3:45 pm I was fully dilated and ready to push. I pushed for about 45 minutes (which i guess is a long time), and then my Dr finally decided he needed to give me an episiotomy (by then i was like whatever). So after he did that, two more pushes our little guy was out!

Our sweet little guy weighed 7 lbs 4 oz and was 20 inches and 1/4 long (they said he was a little longer because of his cone head). Brad and I spent some time with him before they cleaned both mommy and him up and decided that the name we inititally thought we would call him, just didn't seem to fit. (plus when i was in and out of consciousness from the pain meds, i called him Evan). So Brad and I decided that his name would be Evan Bennett Elmer (which we later found out is the middle name of one of his great grandpas: Grandpa Lynn Evan Woolf).

The first few days were a little rough and everything was quite overwhelming (just on the mom side). We had lots of family come visit us and celebrate little Evan's birth and we are so thankful for their support. Brad and i are just loving our sweet little Evan and learning how to be parents. The feeding is going a lot better than i thought it would which i'm really happy about. Im just slowly healing and my mom and brad are so wonderful to me. Walking, standing, sitting are all very painful for me still and my husband and mom have just been waiting on me hand and foot! Our little evan loves to sleep and just wakes up to eat (such a hard life!). We love hearing every little noise he makes and he is so special to us. We are so thankful that Heavenly Father trusts us with this sweet spirit. Parenthood... bring it on!

Congratulations, Ashley! Sounds like you had a pretty great labor and delivery. (45 minutes is actually very good for a first time mom. some push for 2-3 hours).
Glad you and Evan are doing well!

Oh my goodness...so darn cute! I love that Brad has his hospital bracelet on. Matt kept his on for as long as he could. I love the glasses on him. So adorable. I can't wait to hold him.

It brings back memories (good and bad)! Evan is adorable and it's awesome that you have such great helpers. Let them do EVERYTHING because overdoing it when you have stitches makes it all worse and you're even more useless. But don't worry, you will get better and feel like yourself again soon enough.

He is TOO cute! I am so sad I live to far away to hold him. Give him lots of kisses and hugs from his cousins in Texas. Just remember I owe you a date night out one of these days, for watching Chloe. Maybe you won't want to leave this one yet. He is sooo cute. Love ya both and congrats!
